The Mirage is interesting because it’s mega cheap and light.
The Vios is interesting because it should be a hatchback.
The Allegro is interesting because it is dreadful.
The Vectra just isn’t.

Well yeah, I am not the OP, but it’s all I had.
The Vectra is the best looking of the 4 though....

There should be a performance trim Mirage. Instead of adding more costly things, add lightness and feedback. Just give it a short throw stick, close ratio gearing, shorter final drive, light flywheel, lighten the interior and add some bracing. None if these things cost anything extra. Boom, instant jalop car of the year for 10 grand.

Yeah, it is the best looking car here.
I love some of the Vectra based Saabs too, but they’re quite different.

That actually probably wouldn’t be bad. And since it is all handling based improvements would that make it still just as cheap or cheaper to insure?

I think you mean the BLS....

Insurance companies don’t know what active safety is. Same cheap insurance for sure.

The Saabillac, absolutely. Also the Viggen, Turbo XWD and 2011 9-5.
I mean, it’s still nasty platform - but you can still make a stylish cruiser out of it.

I went to the thrift store looking for NES games, they did not have any.

You’re not lightening that interior.
I want one as a beginner Rally car.

GM made a big mistake by not offering the BLS over here. A small 4-cylinder luxury car is just what they needed.

The Vios is what Toyota should be selling as the Yaris sedan instead of the inferior rusty Mazda 2.
That Saturn L-series hatchback is kinda cool :p (we never got the hatchback over here, just the sedan and wagon)

I know, the Vios is basically a Yaris with a boot anyway.
It’s just interesting that they sold this version in so many places despite being a pretty impractical saloon/sedan at this size when compared with the hatch.
But I’ll leave it at that, don’t want to start the next Fiesta sedan war. ;P

Actually the new Vios it’s much worse than the old Vios (Yaris Sedan in the US), the seats are harder, interior is nasty, it feels more cramped, it’s uglier while keeping the same drivetrain. The Mazda at least has a nicer interior and handling.
Yes, all of that stitching is fake hard plastic.

I know it’s weird, but I have no other way to describe the Mirage than ‘cute’.
There’s not really many cars quite like it... the 1st gen (to America) Yaris hatchback was with it but then they uglified it trying to make it look aggressive for some reason. Along those same lines, the Prius C too. The new, 2nd gen Smart maybe. And then of course many would say the Mini Cooper, but I have one so I won’t ;)

maybe, but the same drivetrain means it’s a classic reliable Toyota, while the 2 is almost certainly inferior in that regard.

Same same... The only issue when I’m ready is that it is NOT easy at all to find one, let alone find one for sale, let alone find one for sale relatively close to you (at least in the US).
Then you have the Elise which is far more easily attainable in just about every way - and I’m thinking I could probably afford a higher mileage one now even... But it’s just not an Exige... I think you’ll understand completely.
Is that your Miata? I used to have a 95 myself (though I guess that’s not saying much on Jalopnik ). I also had an AW11 MR2 as my first car - literally the closest any kid (or any budget conscious person) can get to an Elise/Exige.

I saw this orange S260 Exige on my way to work just a few days ago. Not just any Exige, but the most exige of Exige...the S260! Thats why I asked if you had an orange exige because that might be you lol. Yeah an Exige goes for around 50k which is 20k more than an Elise so it doesnt make much financial sense. But you are right, an Elise aint no Exige. I would be more than happy to settle for even an Elise one day though :)
Yep thats me in my Miata. I also had an Aw11 for a few months before I found out it had so many issues that needed to be fixed, it wasn’t worth it to put that money into a 3rd car. I love all Lotus-like cars, NA, aw11, and my next car zzw30.
Get a MR2 Spyder with me, they are literally the poor man’s Elise for around $5k.

I’ll definitely have to consider a 3rd gen MR2 at some point... for sure the closest you can get to an Elise for the cheapest price. The only thing that could be better would be if it also used the same 2ZZ like the Celica GT-S.
They look a ton better than the SW20 and are amazingly even lighter than the AW11 - gotta be one of the lightest cars in the 2000s, no? Barely over 2000 lbs.
The only thing is that we only got the convertibles and I’m blech about ‘verts... but considering that I did love my Miata and accepted that because Mazda never made a hardtop, I can pass the same exception to the MR2 Spyder. (And the S2000 - though both did get JDM coupes/hardtops... :/ )
MR2 Spyders, though nowhere near Elise/Exige status, aren’t that easy to find. I see them very rarely on the road and a quick Craigslist search finds one result in the three closest areas. Could just be that there’s not many in the northeast.

MR2 Spyders are very rare. It is a challenge to find one but that adds to the appeal of them since no one knows what car it is when you drive it. It was the lightest MR2, even lighter than the Miata. Sure, it doesn’t have the 2ZZ, but if you were to do the swap, it would be 9/10th Elise. But if kept stock, which I have to since California, I would say 7/10 Elise, which is good enough for me.
